Tianyi Zhang joined the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Syracuse University in January 2026 as a tenure-track assistant professor.
Prior to joining Syracuse, he was a Postdoctoral Associate at MIT under the mentorship of Prof. Jing Kong. Tianyi received his Ph.D. from the Pennsylvania State University, advised by Prof. Mauricio Terrones. His Ph.D. dissertation is available here. Prior to that, he received B.S. degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Tsinghua University, China.
Tianyi’s research focuses on the synthesis, engineering, and characterization of two-dimensional (2D) materials for their applications in nanoelectronics, quantum information, sensing, and photonics. His work has been published in leading journals such as Nature, Nature Reviews Materials, Nature Materials, Advanced Materials, and ACS Nano, with over 4,000 citations and an h-index of 36.

Jack Friedman
Jack Friedman is a Junior in Electrical Engineering at Syracuse University and the Renee Crown University Honors Program. Originally from Mansfield, MA, his research interests include semiconductor research and two-dimensional (2D) materials research. After graduation, Jack plans on pursuing work in the semiconductor industry and receiving his Ph.D.
