Tianyi Zhang

Incoming Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Syracuse University (Starting from Spring 2026)

Tianyi Zhang will be joining the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in the College of Engineering and Computer Science of Syracuse University in Spring 2026 as a tenure-track assistant professor. He is currently a Postdoctoral Associate at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) under the mentorship of Prof. Jing Kong.

Tianyi received his Ph.D. degree in Materials Science and Engineering from the Pennsylvania State University, where he was advised by Prof. Mauricio Terrones. His Ph.D. dissertation is available here. Prior to that, he received B.S. degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Tsinghua University in China.

Tianyi’s research focuses on advancing two-dimensional (2D) materials for next-generation technologies beyond the reach of conventional materials. He tackles challenges in high-quality and scalable growth, precise engineering, and high-throughput characterization of 2D materials to unlock their applications in nanoelectronics, quantum information, sensing, and integrated photonics. His work has been published in leading journals such as Nature, Nature Reviews Materials, Nature Materials, Advanced Materials, and ACS Nano, with over 3,500 citations and an h-index of 33.
